Justice of the Peace Services

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is trained to act as independent and objective witness to documents used for official or legal purposes. Learn more about Justice of the Peace services at the Victorian State Government website. 

JPs run a Document Signing Station at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn. Customers can drop in during advertised hours. Please be aware that JPs are volunteers and may be unavailable at short notice. 

Due to the popularity of this service, you may have to wait in line before a JP is available. JPs may not be able to assist if you have a lot of documents for witnessing or certifying. In these instances, you are encouraged to contact an individual JP to make an appointment.

What services do JPs provide?

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is trained to act as independent and objective witness to documents used for official or legal purposes and can assist you by: 

  • attesting the execution of a document 

  • witnessing a statutory declaration 

  • witnessing an affidavit for use in court 

  • certifying true copies of an original document 

  • certifying a person's identity. 

Not all documents need a Justice of the Peace to witness them. Check what your form requires or visit statutory declarations and affidavits for a full list of authorised witnesses. 

What should I do before going to a Justice of the Peace?

  • Ensure that a Victorian JP is authorised to witness your documents. 

  • Check that a JP is available on the library event page.  

  • Have all your paperwork ready for the JP, ensuring that your documents are not pre-signed. 

  • If you need to print documents at the library, join the library online before you visit and have your membership number ready. 

  • Be mindful that JPs do not provide legal advice. 

  • Note that JPs are not a Notary Public. 

Do I need to book an appointment?

If you only have a few documents, you do not need to book an appointment. You can drop in to the Document Signing Station during advertised hours. 

If you have a lot of documents, or if you can’t make it to any of the advertised sessions, please click here to find a JP and make an appointment. 

Are JP services free?

Yes. JPs offer their time voluntarily and cannot charge for their services.
